Listers,

I have a friend who just bought a new pair of R-13s. He hasn't played in 15
or so years and has asked me questions about new clarinet maintenance. He
told me that the guy who sold him his instruments told him that he should
limit the time he plays on the instruments to a half an hour a day.

I have never heard of such a thing for clarinets. Oboes yes, but not
clarinets. Since I have never had a problem with cracking (perhaps due to
my playing in San Diego, CA-a most pleasant and consistant climate for
those who may not know this place), or given a new clarinet any special
treatment at all (except for the pampering, love-affair treatment I would
give any "new relationship") I'm at a loss as to what to tell him. Perhaps
he was told this because of the climate where he lives (Northern Germany).

I've told him to keep his instrument dry, swab frequently, and to check all
tone holes and tenon joints for moisture before packing up. I believe that
moisture is a serious factor in cracking instruments. Also, to allow to let
the clarinet become accustomed to climate, as sudden changes in temp or
humidity could cause cracking as well. But for me, having no experience
with this problem, these are just beliefs. Confirmation of this would be
most helpful.

Any suggestions as to what I should tell my friend about limiting his
practice time would be very much appreciated.

TIA,

Frank
