Sorry about the last reply only/nothing new post. It was an accident.

I would say a resounding *YES*! A professional horn would be better for many reasons:

1. You would be more likely to use it longer and progress farther in a shorter amount of time.

2. With the price of clarinets going up, an R13 will be about 25% more money when you get to college, and finances will probably be tighter anyway because of the cost of college (even with grants and scholarships.) Plus the professional horn and your bigger advancement in the years before college can get you a bigger scholarship, or one to a better school.

3. An R13 has *much* better resale value, because it is the standard professional horn...not for *all* people, but it is the most widely used by professionals and people who buy professional model horns. Yamaha horns are not really sought after in resale, nor by pawn shops.

4. The last reason would be because Yamaha clarinets, while good instruments, tend to play very bright in the upper register, and when playing loud. If I was not going to buy a horn, and the R13 was too much, I would try the Buffet E13 or the Leblanc Sonate or Infiniti. They are close to professional horns with better tone quality. While you can teach basic technique to a monkey, you cannot get better tone than the equipment will allow.
