I'm not saying I agree with this, but I do think there are valid
differences between the way one should present their music for a
successful ensemble audition versus a successful concerto competition,
for example.
I think many orchestral and band conductors are concerned more with
homogenous expression of a section or group of instruments than
individual expression of one soloist. So perhaps they are concentrating
more on a "fit" within a section than your individual creativity.
One of my older instructors used to tell me orchestral playing was much
like being a pipe in an organ that the conductor could use to his taste.
Perhaps that is why I like chamber music most!
