According to the list on sneezy (at www.sneezy.org/clarinet/Equipment/How =
Old/Buffet.html/), your Buffet with a serial number that begins with "A" =
was built in 1886 or 1887. Check it out.

I have an Albert system Lafayette C clarinet which I believe dates from =
somewhere
between 1900 - 1912 which uses the pin/hole linkage on the left hand E/B =
lever.
While the linkage is more straightforward than that on a Boehm system, the =
principal
is the same. I don't know when this approach became commonplace on Boehm
instruments but clarinet makers certainly knew about it. I wonder if, in =
fact, it
didn't precede the (presumably) cheaper approach now found on many student =
models.
BTW, I eliminated the "play" in the linkage by wrapping the pin carefully =
with
teflon tape. So far it has held up (but it gets relatively light use).

I also have (what I believe to be) a very early (Buffet) Evette & =
Schaeffer clarinet
which uses this linkage. (The serial number is Axxxx. I have never been =
able to
find a list of dates and serial numbers (and label changes) for Buffet's
"intermediate" clarinets though so I don't know how old it is. Both the =
instrument
and its case, however, suggest 1930's or 40's. Is there any chance you =
could
provide a date list to Sneezy, Francois? I know that I, for one, would be =
most
grateful.)

Best regards,
