Subj: [kl] Stability Problems with Articulation?
Date: Fri, 28 Aug 1998 10:07:50 -0400

Greetings,

This is my first post to this list after re-subscribing just recently.
Nice to be back, and congrats on the new systems and web site. Things
look great.

I have a student who has tremendous problems with articulation because
her embouchure seems to collapse very quickly.

She has a beautiful embouchure otherwise, and when she is playing
slurred, things work marvelously. She came from an anchor tongue
background, so I'm fairly convinced that has something to do with it;
perhaps that she is moving her tongue too much or that the throat/jaw is
becoming too involved in the articulation process.

I currently have her alternating between slurred and articulated
passages (5 times slurred, once articulated), which is showing some
progress, but clearly this is a very slow road for her. I'm unable to
see any sort of changes in her playing between the two styles. She is
unable to perceive any changes, either.

I'm afraid I'm overlooking something that is completely obvious, so I'm
hoping someone else has encountered this problem either in his/her own
playing or with instruction of others. Any comments are appreciated.

Thanks,
Jeff
