In a message dated 98-08-24 10:37:29 EDT, you write:

<< BUT HERE'S AN IMPORTANT DISCUSSION TOPIC:
Soon though I think I'm going to have to book an appointment (with Brannen)
to have a look at it. It's unfortunate that Buffet doesn' t make standard
on their instruments (esp. a Prestige) some things that could save us
clarinet players $$$$ in adjustments.
SUCH AS: why have so much cork on instruments!!!!!! Hey guys, this is the
20th century, you think we would have progressed beyond using 18th
materials!!!! Brannen worked MIRACLES, on my A and Bb clarinets. In
many cases, he used teflon etc... to get rid of cork between joint
completely! That's great: cork wears down, gets compressed and breaks!
My A and Bb mechanisms are now very efficient, and very quiet!! Why is
there cork all over my new bass!!!!!!!! HMMMMMM?????? With an instrument
like a bass, that has so many levers, contact points etc. where cork is
required, why not use some great space-age material to begin with......why
send me on a 5hr trip to Chicago, to pay $$$$, and a hotel when this
should be done by Buffet to begin with.!!!

So there, now you have it! I love my bass, I love the sound!! It's a
gorgeous instrument, I'm babying it like I've never done before, but my
beef is with the people who build the darn things!
p.s. Francois Kloc was GREAT at the conference. He looked over the
instrument for me, did some minor adjustments, wonderful! Merci encore,
Francois! Ton aide est tres bien appreciƩe!

Dear Line,

I am replying in English even if my French is way better but I would like the
people on the list read this. You said that you will have to book an
appointment with Mr Brannen to make your Bass Clarinet better, I am little bit
concern about this not that I don't trust Mr Brannen and is work but you said
that we didn't do our job right and I would like to ask you what exacly is
wrong with your instrument since I am incharge of the Quality and Set Up for
the Buffet product in this Market.
You are saying that it is the 20th century you are right and we do use
syntethic cork since a few years now. We have to think to of what is the best
material to use on a production line and what will last long enought.I do know
the cork is a material that you have to replace after while certainly not
after two weeks or month or even years.
I had a customer last week who play on a R13 that he bought 3 years ago and he
didn't replace one cork.He just wanted to have cork pads and Gore Tex and I
did the work for him.(Free). I do not have a lot of time to do work like this
but when somebody come to see me in Libertyville and make appoiytment in
advance I am glad to do it. Like I said what Mr Brannen use and what he does
on your instruments is certainly great but he doesn't have to make 97 clarinet
per days. we could use all fancy materials we do use some of them already but
it could cost much more.I don't know how much Mr Brannen charge you for is
work so imagine what he would cost us to do it on production horn.To finish I
would like to know if your intsrument is playable this what concern me most,I
am working hard with the two other technicians here to put the instruments in
PERFECT condition in the market. If you have playability problems please let me
know and I will fixe anything at no charge. For the rest it is your personnal
feeling and idear of setup that we cannot know before you play on the
instrument.A lot of musician have different need and use different set up it
is why Mr Brannen and other technicians are here for.We are here to provide
you with the best intsrument we can provide and I am here to make sure it is
at a high quality level.

Merci beaucoup et j'etais tres ravi de vous rencontrez

Musicaly Yours
