Just some comments on cork - 1) it has a high coefficient of sliding
friction; 2) it absorbs water and swells. There are problems caused by
both these properties, but they are useful as well, particularly the
friction, as anyone with a slightly worn middle joint soon finds out if
s/he wants to prevent any wobble without causing a tendency to rotate....
Some of the reasons for winemakers using it are the same.
