I know Dan Leeson is currently on vacation and unsubscribed from this
mailing list, so I'm including his own address along with that of Klarinet
for this message in hope that he'll find this message when he returns.

Last winter during a thread about the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, Dan
posted a moving message about Hugo Burghauser, the bassoonist and former
VPO president who courageously defied the Nazis in 1938, ultimately quiting
his important position in Vienna rather than obeying the Nazi orders to
fire every Jewish musician in the orchestra. (Check the archives for a copy
of his message of January 4, 1998.)

Well, I just finished reading a wonderful article by our own Dan Leeson in
the current (August 1998) issue of the magazine _Moment_. Expanding on this
very important matter, Dan tells of his experience meeting Burghauser while
playing the "very busy" bass clarinet part to Strauss's _Elektra_ at the
Met. The article was, for me, fascinating from musical, historical, and
religious perspectives. The writing style is what we on the Klarinet
mailing list have easily learned to love. If you have access to this
magazine (and I know there are many on this mailing list who do), read it;
you'll be glad you did.

Incidentally, and of more general interest to the Klarinet community, Dan's
bio is accompanied by a small photograph of the author. He doesn't look a
day over 45! May he continue to publish for many, many years.
