Hi there. I have two questions to ask. Firstly:
What does the breaking in of a clarinet actually do? Does it dry
out the wood, make it used to expansion and contraction due to heat, etc?
And secondly: Wouldn't the thicker wood of the clarinet actually
make it more prone to cracking than the oboe? Withg thinner walls the wood
gets more chance to heat right through rather than only on the inside while
the outside remainc cold. I've heard this theory used for glass cups. If
you wash them in hot water the thick ones are more likely to crack than the
thin ones.
Thanks.
Gareth
