I am still playing the same R-13 that I got in 1968 as a junior in high
school (#101452) and it is shiny and smooth inside and out and has no
checks or cracks. I abuse it terribly - take it from the warm house to
my cold car trunk where it sits for hours getting very cold and then it
goes right to a rehearsal or performance in a nice warm hall without
proper warm-up (because I am usually coming right from work and am
late). I have done the same thing with my A (#2xxxx) and my E-flat
(can't remember # and can't look it up right now, but I bought it in
1978 ). The E-flat has many open grain areas inside the bore, but no
cracks or checks and the A is shiny smooth inside and out. I guess I am
just lucky.

I also don't have the reed problems that seem to plague everyone else.
I take them out of the box and slap them on the mouthpiece and maybe
sand them a little on the right side (I use traditional Vandoren #3.5's)
and they play like a charm. Been doing this for about thirty-some
years. Why am I so different from everyone else?
