I have 3 R-13s: a 1968 A, a 1972 Bb and a 1990 Eb. None of them are cracked
in any way. I have used all 3 in outdoor concerts (never a football game),
no problem.

I fear for the Eb a bit--the grain is not as close as the older horns, and
there is (believe it or not) a big pit on the inside of the bore near the
bell! I bought it rather than the other 4 I tried out, however, because it
was much better in tune.

IMHO, some horns crack. They just do. Wood will do that from time to
time--if there is an internal flaw that can't take the difference in
expansion, it will crack. "Better" or heavier wood may be less prone, but I
doubt it. If it doesn't crack in the first year, though, it's probably not
going to.

I've a 23xxx in good shape with no cracks
I've a 101xxx in perfect shape
I've a 201xxx with one upper joint crack
I've a 183xxx with a gaping upper joint crack
My 292xxx A has no cracks and
my 395xxx Eb has a check that hasn't moved since I bought it new.

(Shameless plug: My 23xxx is for sale. :)
