I'm hoping some of you will help relieve my ignorance.
I had been under the impression that the baffle of the mouthpiece was
supposed to be smooth. This was one of the things prompting me to look
for a new one, as there had been some minor scratching on mine for as
long as I can remember.

So, I've been trying out a few mouthpieces, and among them got a couple
of Jewels. I have been kind of partial to the one I tried, but haven't
even tried the other yet 'cause I'm put off by major "grooviness" on
the baffle. Numerous little troughs running vertically. A friend thinks
they're scratches, but they look to me like some natural condition of
the rubber, a sort of grainy quality, maybe something that happened in
drying or cooling? Is this something common that I just hadn't run into
yet?

The one I like also has one on the far left side, and some minor
surface disruption elsewhere. Should I be concerned about this? Or, is
it just the tip baffle that matters, which I suppose has been shaped to
the manufacturer's satisfaction?

thanks,
barry
