Subj: [kl] Clarinet players at Music Academy of the West

My wife and I went to Santa Barbara, CA last weekend to hear a
performance of Magic Flute. The summer music school held in
Santa Barbara is called the Music Academy of the West. I played
there a few times when they needed basset horns and it was always
a great pleasure to work there. The students were all uniformly
excellent, the environment sensational, and the people nice.

This year there were four students and I heard two of them. One
is from Los Altos which is where I live (and Karen D. for those
of you who remember her). There were Thomas Fortier of Florence,
Oregon who attends the Univ. of Michigan, Sean McLaughlin of
Los Altos, also a student at the Univ. of Michigan, Meighan Stoops of
Jamestown, RI who studied at Northwestern and begins as a student
of David Shifrin in the fall, and Brooks Thon of Stafford Springs,
CT who is at the Univ. of Michigan.

I heard Thon and McLaughlin in Magic Flute and they played
beautifully. Their teacher, Fred Ormand, is also instructor
of clarinet at Santa Barbara and he played the Quartet for the
End of Time the week before I got there so I did not hear him.
He is a remarkable player, though and also very competent on
basset horn.

It was a nice weekend. Had a lovely time, thanks.
