I find that combining the two methods works great. If I am confronted
by a long technical passage. I play it first a couple of times at
whatever tempo i can manage to get through it at. After I have a feel
for the passage I break it down. I take it a measure at a time or a
phrase if the phrase is about a measure. Then i play it over and over
as fast as possible usually I like to be able to play it even faster
then the tempo calls for. Then I take the next measure and practice it
the same way. Then I combine the two measures. Then I take the next
measure and practice it as fast as possible until I can play it fast
enough then i combine the three measures. I continue on and on until I
have the entire passage down. Start slow and in small sections and dont
stop. Just pretend the measure is enclosed by repeat signs and play it
over and over without a break. Picking up the tempo each time through
until I can play it up to tempo or even faster. Then move on to the next
small section and repeat.

The two methods are both good on their own depending on what you are
dealing with, but combing the two methods is great.
