I'm afraid that you are in error if you feel that the kind of scale played
at an audition defines either level of instructor or quality/level of
school.
Neither is the level of scale asked for an indicator of how demanding an
instructor is or how demanding a school is. David
Shifrin never listened to one scale from me during the time I studied with
him at Michigan, nor was I asked for any on my taped audition (the live
audition was the same)........it is a question of philosophy....scales can
be learned and played for juries.........
I am aware of some very fine teachers at superb schools (both private or
otherwise) which do not ask for any scales during an audition.
