Yes, you probably can*--the inclusion of such excerpts for
scholarship/criticism is what the "fair use" exception is all about.
Snippets for academic examples should in fact increase the sales of the
works, which is the economic justification for the exception.

I find this all very interesting, but not just a little confusing re:
copying excerpted portions of a work.
If I want to write an article for "Clarinet" magazine (not for profit)
or "Instrumentalist" (they pay for articles) on a certain work, and that
work has several editions (some with a copyright "seal" on them, and
some older ones published before that "seal" was in existence), can I
put in a few bars as a musical example without the copyright holder's
permission? Or do I have to receive permission from the publisher of
each edition in order to quote a few bars from each for a comparitive
analysis?
Seems like more trouble than it's worth, even if I get paid for the
article.
