Has anyone had any experience with the new clarinet pads made by Powell (the
flute company)?
Each pad has a plastic or perhaps metal resonator cup on it (a la saxophone
and flute).
A set of pads costs around $90 Canadian.
I recall an article in The Clarinet on resonator pads for bass clarinet. The
author found that
to the ear the resonator pads greatly enhanced the sound and projection of
the bass clarinet
and a spectrograph analyzer found that each note (especially for the "long"
fingerings) had
a fuller complement of harmonics and overtones.
The new Powell pads are for soprano clarinet.
I am sure someone has experimented with resonators on soprano clarinet but
their
lack of widespread use, especially among symphonic players who are always
looking for
an aid in projection, suggest to me that their trial wasn't successful.
I should get an overhaul soon and these Powell resonator pads are beckonning
me from their
perch in my repairman's shop.
Should I give in?
