I find this all very interesting, but not just a little confusing re:
copying excerpted portions of a work.

If I want to write an article for "Clarinet" magazine (not for profit)
or "Instrumentalist" (they pay for articles) on a certain work, and that
work has several editions (some with a copyright "seal" on them, and
some older ones published before that "seal" was in existence), can I
put in a few bars as a musical example without the copyright holder's
permission? Or do I have to receive permission from the publisher of
each edition in order to quote a few bars from each for a comparitive
analysis?

Seems like more trouble than it's worth, even if I get paid for the
article.
