You know you're getting old when the pop music of your youth is the
subject of a musicological treatise! I highly recommend the Cambridge
Music Companion for The Beatles "Sgt. Pepper" album. Very interesting!

Also, in regard to Mozart - I've been reading H.C. Robbins Landon's "The
Mozart Essays" ($9.98 US, Daedelus Books <http://www.daedelus-books.com>
) and he cites the reaction of Empress Maria Luisa to "La Clemenza de
Tito" (commissioned for a coronation). Her remark was that the opera was
"una porcheria tedesca" translated by HCRL as "a German swinishness". So
much for elitism developing taste!
