Chris -
that's an "and" in the first statement, implying all 4. If any _one_ term
would qualify, it would be stated as "... in varying melody, harmony,
rhythm, or timbre". _Most_ of the rap "music" I listen to (and I do listen
to MTV, BET, VH1, and CMT often) does not qualify on all 4 counts. There are
some that definitely _do_ qualify in my interpretation of Webster's as
music - but not many. That's why I qualified my comments, neither for or
against rap. Also, here in Detroit, where a lot of rap (and techno!)
originates, the rappers call it "rap" and a few other terms (which escape my
mind currently), none combined with the term "music". I'm not really sure
who has put the "music" in with the "rap" part - possibly it was there in
the beginning, or possibly some marketer added it, but our locals don't say
"rap music", they just say "rap".

Cheers,
