Good :-), don't encourage me too much or I'll fill another page... I think
(but am not sure) that literature/films/art often express what is not
currently 'acceptable' in society, and currently (if I'm not mistaken)
there's a lot of 'political correctness' about. (It could be, though, that
you're just *noticing* swearing more recently, for some reason.)

I don't think people change that much over the centuries (no I don't
remember that far back). You can tell kids to behave differently, and they
*may* (e.g.) not swear if their teachers (or whoever) discourage them, but
when they're really at their limits or when their teachers aren't around
they'll end up behaving as they need to (hopefully without doing anything
*too* bad along the way). People don't like being *too* restricted.
(Personally I've often got *very* annoyed if people have tried to stop me
swearing, but I can see that a lot of people really hate it, and my desire
to do it *isn't* that great so I don't do it as a matter of course. But
should I ever find myself on the wrong end of military gunfire, I think
trying not to swear would be the least of my problems!)

Mary
