In Colin Lawson's book he indicated that the first basset clarinets (basset
horns I can't attest to) did not have all the semitones down to C but
rather E,(Eb?), D and C. I don't have the book in front of me and can't
cite his sources but he does correlate the addition of keys with their
usage by Mozart.
