Unfortunately, in my neck of the woods, students put down classical music. It
is really a shame how one could be so close-minded. I appreciate all sorts of
music, but my peers either like only rap, or only hard rock. Sad.
And the only way I spark interest to them in classical playing is if I spruce
it up with contemporary stylings (on piano). I'll do glissandos and whatever
to get them to listen to me. I really hate to stoop to that level. I can
imagine that some composers would be rolling in their graves.
I can only spark any interest on clarinet if I play jazz in the extreme
altissimo. I once did the First Movement of Weber's Concerto No. 2 ata
concert. The parents appreciated it, but the peers were asleep (almost).
It's when I go to music camps, that I feel more appreciated. I did the Weber
No. 2 again for a talent night, and got a standing ovation, and many cheers.
Uncultured Vinton kids, anyway.
