Subj: [kl] Making the Conference better
Date: Tue, 28 Jul 1998 01:24:01 -0400

Mark,

I agree that we should have a larger participation at these events.
It would be tough to accomodate 4,000!!!!! Size of performance venues are a
problem. I think the participation at OSU was the greatest I have seen
since I started attending in 1991.

The Conference itself was superb. I also appreciated the professional
set up of the exhibitor area, (a bit too small, though). But the housing at
the dorms was ATROCIOUS!! I think for $34 a night i should have expected a
CLEAN bathroom. I came home with a case of athlete's foot!! The floors were
filthy and the rooms were poorly lit.

Another problem was the shuttle service back and forth to the
airport. It ended too early on Tuesday and i don't think it was available
on Monday. No efforts were made to organize shuttle service for Saturday
when many people left.

I have suggested EVERY YEAR that exhibitors who are participating be
listed in the Volume of the Clarinet just prior to July. This would
encourage Exhibitors to get deposits in early AND let everyone know if
their favorite mouthpiece maker will be attending ;-) The Exhibits are not
only an important aspect of the Conference, but our fees certainly off set
a portion of the Conference expense.

I will state again that i think Jim Pyne did a great job. For those
of you considering going to Belgium in 1999, I can tell you from the last
conference in Belgium that Guido Six puts on A FANTASTIC conference. The
accomodations next summer will be at a palace/hotel on the beach. Pretty
tough to beat that. At the previous conference put on by Guido we were
treated to a different Belgian beer every night after the evening programs
-FREE. Attendance was very high!!

PS - I already have already told Guido I'm going!!
