Ed,
I don't usually reply re posts to the list that I emphatically agree
with, but your post about not putting up with excessive sound pressure
levels at rehearsals and concerts is very important for young musicians.
It is incumbent on conductors to be sympathetic to complaints from the
wind players re high levels of loudness from the brass and percussion
sections.
I don't remember the exact percentages, but in some survey I read
recently re this problem in orchestras, it found that c.8-10 per cent of
string players,20-25 per cent of wind players,50-60 per cent of brass
players, and 100 per cent of percussionists suffered from hearing
loss(for their age).
Don't be shy about addressing this problem.
