I purchased a new R13 A a couple years ago and used it for one show (6 3-hour
performances and maybe another 10 hours of practice and rehearsal. In other
words, this was a low-mileage A. I found the instrument to have a lovely tone
but to be stuffy at the break. I then loaned the clarinet to a young student
who used it extensively for the academic year. Now that I have the clarinet
back, it plays like a dream. I think the pads (or instrument itself) needed a
breaking in period.
