Subj: [kl] Leister Vs. Kenny G
Date: Sat, 25 Jul 1998 23:13:05 -0400

Now that I grabbed your attention with that lovely email title, here's what I
have to say. Months ago we had a lengthy discussion about Mr. Leister,
weighing pros and cons about his playing. I am not bashing Karl or Kenny
here, just clarifying a grossly overlooked point. MAKING AND SELLING A
MILLION RECORDINGS DOESN'T MEAN JACK!!!! In classical music, it's rare
but... look at Kenny G or any pop/rock group recording/performing today. Not
a lot of talent, but somehow these pop guys (and some classical... no names
mentioned) are killing and racking up the dough! Does popularity equal
talent? If so, explain the above anomalies.
Anybody can make records and buy fame or infamy with enough money. The key
word is: Financial Benefactor.

Yes, Karl Leister and Kenny G have made many recordings and are extremely
succesful in their genres, but are they great musicians? Because I play the
clarinet or sax, do I have to respect - or agree with - their musical
abilities? Also, does having a huge record collection make one an expert
about such a subjective topic? The answer is NO. It's all opinion. Please
don't fireball we with mega-flamage, I'm only giving my very humble opinion!
: )

Websters Ninth New Collegiate Dictionary defines OPINION as the following:

OPINION: 1. A view, ,judgement, or appraisal formed in the mind about a
particular matter. 2. Belief stronger than impression and less strong than
positive knowledge. 3. A formal expression of judgement or advice by an
expert.
