I've seen several, including one instrument I still own, that were "Moennig"
Buffets that had tape in tone holes to flatten an occasional sharp note. I
don't know for certain if he put it there or simply acquiesced in its
presence after the owner put it in. Honestly, the last time he worked on one
of my instruments was so long ago, I can't be certain what I remember seeing
him do first-hand. My feeling is that he would have yanked it out and redone
it a better way if tape weren't to his liking. But you're absolutely right,
the tape never went into the bore. It was a very narrow strip of tape on the
top (mouthpiece) side of the hole, never all the way around or on the
bottom.
