My guess is that you got an A that really didn't match your Bb is all. A
clarinet that is stuffy for one player isn't for the next - the
characteristics you describe sound like playing on a clarinet your not
adjusted to.
I have yet to find an A like my Bb, but I know people who have gone
through the time and trouble and sit down with several As and find the one
that plays, feels, and sounds closest to their Bb. That way they could
weed out the ones that were stuffy for them, or didn't particularly work
well with their emb./setup.

If you hadn't already bought yours, Karen, I'd have suggested the same
thing. ^_^ Needless to say, next summer, I hope to fly to North Carolina
where I can sit down and play Greenline As at Muncy's until I find the
right one.
