A couple of years ago I played a July 4th concert with real cannon (not the
Pachelbel kind) firing right next to the band(orchestra)stand. The orchestra
actually supplied the earplugs. I don't know if they're the same kind Mary
was talking about, but they're made by a company called Cabot Safety
Corporation (I have a leftover pair still in my clarinet case). From the
looks of the packaging, I'd guess you might try a medical supply place. It
was pretty tricky, though, hearing all the passagework around me during the
battle section. I wouldn't say I could hear clearly with these, but they
made the artillery fire very bearable, not to mention the trumpets who were
much closer.
