For all of you wondering, I was not serious in the least bit when I said
"we shouldn't argue with society" which I thought I had indicated with
the emoticon.

Fred, I agree with you when you say that anyone's musical interpretation
is correct. While auditioning that particular piece, my interpretation
(similar to what Kell did) was not accepted by the judge. The reason?
It was apparently not contemporary enough. Too bad because I like it
better the way Kell did. I believe though that most modern
interpretations are much different thatn Kell's, and IMHO very rushed
and don't do justice to the beauty of the piece.

I think it is of the utmost importance for a musician to play what they
feel even though it may be different than what society is used to.

Mary, I don't think that there's a wrong way to play that piece. The
last thing I would ever do, if you ever got to know me, would be to back
down and have a quiet life and not annoy anyone. I love Mr. Kell's
interpretation of the piece and I don't think there's any plausible way
to say that one "can't" play it like that. At the same time there are
always going to be a few people who don't accept your interpretation and
will get in your way. I'll always play it from the soul but if I wanted
to pass an audition I'd better figure out how the judge interprets the
piece. Sad but true it is one thing I have learned in my few years of
music so far. I hope it is not always that way but it can be.

Sorry to Mr. Sheim and to anyone else who read the message and was
offended by it. I was not serious when I said that and I thought it was
clear in the message but I guess not.

Mark
