While it's true that Dolphy died long before Benny Goodman, I don't think
it was inappropriate to invoke him as one of the people who has kept jazz
clarinet alive. He was the one who inaugurated the bass clarinet as a solo
jazz instrument (it had been used to a limited extent in big bands). His
influence can be seen in the work of such avant-garde instrumentalists such
as Anthony Braxton. In a way, you can say that his influence outlived him,
and that this influence certainly survived the death of Goodman.
