The Klarinet list is sometimes naughty, sometimes nice, like most human
endeavors. Every internet list or newsgroup I've ever messed with, on any
topic, (and I've been fooling with it since Fidonet was the big thing)
shares a bias, which is that general, broad questions rarely get good
answers. Not that there's anything wrong with general, broad questions -
it's just that one looks at them, says, "how long would it take to take
to do justice to *that,*?" and tends to move on. You've indicated that a
"top of head" answer would do - the problem is that I for one would not
give a "top of head" answer on anything I was not totally confident on
because there are far too many knowledgable people on this list who would
(rightly) take me to task for all the inaccuracies and inconsistencies
found in that answer.

More to the point, her question (and, apparently, yours) is a fairly
broad one based on a composition which has no doubt been carefully
critiqued in print many times. Some of that critique may be out there on
the web. If she had asked where to find that material, she probably would
have gotten help. If she had indicated that she had looked and not found
it, she probably would have gotten help looking, or been pointed to books
she could look for (I happen to have done research for my marketing
degree on the availability of books in Australia, so I know that while
you're more isolated than we are in the US, you're far from being a
desert island). To be quite frank, we get a lot of people who float in
here looking for us to do their homework for them, and there is also a
bias toward making sure that the person asking the question has made some
efforts first. Those of us who have spent hours in the trenches of
research get nasty that way :)

Once having done some basic homework, I think she would find many people
both able and willing to help with concrete, well-defined facts and
opinions. I got a lot of help from this list recently while preparing for
a recital on a far more obscure piece: the Stamitz Clarinet Concerto in
Bb. I was looking for help resolving some possible inconsistencies in the
score I had regarding some grace notes and their interpretation. I
quickly hooked up with another list member who had the same edition I had
and we got it figured out. So I know the system works; in fact I've
noticed the more concrete stuff like that we have going, the less we seem
to focus on pedistools and the like.

I hope you and your student will both take this in the spirit intended
and be active members of the list.
