Subj: [kl] New Swing (was Benny Goodman/Jazz Clarinet)

My babysitter, all of 16 years old, turned me on to this "new" music that
she and her friends are really excited about. The name of the band is
(frightening to her parents) the "Cherry Poppin' Daddies." They are a
*terrific* swing band!

The most amazing thing about this "new" band, though, is their arrangements.
Not the lyrics, mind you, which may cause Tipper Gore some concern, but the
horn licks--THEY'RE ALL FROM BENNY GOODMAN TUNES.

With a sly grin, I pulled out a certain recording of a certain Louis Prima
tune from a certain concert held in a certain concert hall in 1936 (surely
you know which one). She liked it, of course--and wanted to know when their
next CD was coming out!

Seriously--if you like swing, you'll love this recording (the CPDs); the
band is very tight, and sounds even better with modern recording techniques.

The short explanation is that "Swing" is one of the named forms that
occurred during the gradual development of jazz. It was the predominant
form between Dixieland and Bebop, or between the early 1930's and
mid-to-late 1940's. And I tend to agree with you. Swing is less
contrapuntal, yet conversely more organized, than Dixieland, yet more
melodic than Bebop and most of what came after. It's MY favorite.

If you have to mic a saxophone, the rest of the band is too loud.
