Since we've been discussing Benny Goodman and swing I'd like to pose a question that I've been
wondering about for a while. I've been learning the great Goodman and Shaw solos by grabbing
a transcription where I can find it, then listening to a recording and imitating the solo. Oftentimes the
solo differs significantly from the transcription, probably because the transcription was taken from a different
recording of the same piece.
My method is effective, but slow, and there are some charts I've been unable to find.
Does anyone know of a published compilation of the great swing clarinet solo pieces, such as:
Let's Dance (Goodman)
Begin the Beguine (Artie Shaw)
Deep Purple (Artie Shaw)
B-19 (Goodman)
Roll 'Em (Goodman)
So Rare (Jimmy Dorsey - Alto Sax)
I've thought about compiling it myself, as my collection is getting pretty good, but getting all those
copyright permissions (mostly finding who owns them ) would be a big hassle.
I've cross-posted this note on the SAXOPHONE list.
