I've seen some of the other replies to this. I don't think Bailliett(sp?)
is entirely fair or accurate. In a small but growing collection of
clarinet music at home, I've got not only Eddie Daniels and Buddy De Franco
CDs but also recodings by Ken Peplowski and Kenny Davern. Davern is
something of a throwback. Peplowski, who I think is still in his 30s,
began as a rather traditional jazz player but is more recently into
"crossover" material: he plays jazz concerti and even Lutoslawski on a CD
called "The Other Portrait."

I gather Pete Fountain is very much around. And someone mentioned Eric
Dolphy, who I've heard on the bass clarinet, and who is amazing.

I think this has come up before: the artist who can play crossover styles.
Charles Russo has been mentioned here, though his solo recordings that I
know of are of his chamber music work. And someone yesterday, another
prospective teacher I've been interviewing:-), knew Larry Combs when they
were both starting out, and said Combs was ALWAYS a fabulous jazz player
who chose the classical route. This guy was surprised, however, that
apparently Ricardo Morales can also play jazz.
