Jay, I suspect that clarinet competitions (like any kind of competition) are
affected by many variables including politics among judges, outright
favoritism toward students from certain schools, subversion (one competitor
purposely attempting to mess with another's instrument or his mindset), and
the quality of the competitors themselves. In a competition of mediocre
players, one will probably still "WIN" and be declared the best. I make an
analogy to dog shows where a dog might be judged a champion in a part of the
country where there are few competitors but would be escorted from the ring in
another part of the country where competition is more fierce. As a non-
competitive clarinetist, I have no direct experience with clarinet
competitions. But as I push 50, I've been around the music stand a few
times...
