While out in Portland, OR, I had a wonderful opportunity to visit with one
of my first teachers, Stan Stanford at Portland State University, and he
graciously showed me both his CD project and his collection of over 70
Wind Up record players and cylinder players. What a great evening!

The purpose of my telling all of you this is that Stan has a terrific CD
that will be coming out that presents rare and unknown recordings taken
directly from the cylinders and remastered through computer technology to
eliminate pops and cracks (surface noise remains however). These
recordings were done between 1895 and 1930, and the playing is simply
unbelieveable in some cases. Tone quality, technique,
musicianship.....all wonderfully honed and presented in a single take.
Most recordings last only 4.5 minutes because of the limitations of the
cylinders. Suprisingly, all recordings had instrumental back up (band) -
even the orchestral concertos and variations. The theory is that strings
simply did not record well. A few recordings included piano
accompaniment.

If any Klarinet subscribers have cylinders from the time period I have
mentioned, please contact me so that I can see if the recording might be
included on the CD - there is still time.
