David, you are hanging out on a limb on this one. In the oboe form it was
in C major. In the flute form it was in D major. True, the word
"adapted" can be used, but it is not precise enough. A work produced
in a different key than the original has a whole series of problems
whose solution is a good deal more than an adaptation. I give you as
a case in point, the variations of K. 361 which are in B-flat major,
and the same set of variations (not done by Mozart) as found in the
flute quartet, K. 285b, but in C major.

I also ask you to make an effort to not be so critical of those
on this list whose ideas you do not care for. In the above note from
you to Chris, your first words suggest that he does not know what
he is talking about. In your note to Karen from Los Altos, which
should have been off line, not cluttering up technical discussions,
you publicly rebuked her, in my view inappropriately.

Personally, I am invariably skeptical of notes on this list when
their first thrust is an insult.
