In the schools in my area (San Fransisco Bay) the teachers don't even hand out
the solos in the first place. I'd never even heard of a concerto until I
started private lessons late in my sophomore year of high school. It's kind of
sad... Plus the teachers don't take anytime out of their day to help
individuals. I was last chair in the lowest band my freshman year in High
School, and after only one year of taking private lessons I was 2nd chair in
the highest band.(we have 3 bands so that's a pretty big jump) Teachers need
to put more effort into their job and help individuals.
