I find both Books of the Rubank Advanced Method to the best that the =
Rubank series has to offer. All my students seem to do well that play =
in Book 1, especially the great duos. I feel that Book 2 should be =
given only if there are supplemental exercises and solo works in the =
easier keys (F, C, G). I find Book 2 a little less inspired with the =
duos and exercises and as a result am concerned that my students don't =
get bored and frustrated with the harder key signatures. I don't =
particularly like the beginning Rubank and the intermediate seems even =
worse.
If I had to edit the Advanced method (1 & 2) I would include longer =
etudes and more solo pieces so you don't have to spend the first 15 =
lessons playing only 2 relatively slow pieces. =20

I agree with Dee Hayes that the Rubank Elementary book is excellent =
for
teaching beginners the basics of clarinet and the rudiments of music =
in a
systematic way. It's dated, dull and demanding, but supplemented =
with a
little recreational material - easy solos with piano accompaniment - =
it
still works. It seems as though there should be something newer that =
does
the job as well, but I haven't found it yet. The Rubank Intermediate =
book
is also still useable, but at that point I usually put students in
Langenus, and start them on them the famous five pages of Practical
Exercises in Klose, three or four a week, to ground them in =
alternate
fingerings. By the way, does it seem to anyone else that Rubank's =
Advanced
Book II is less advanced than Book I, but more valuable? I don't use =
it
regularly, but it contains some very useful material.
