In reply to Roger Shilcock(Monday, July 20)

I find this fingering useful also. I find that it is a little flat ( I =
play Buffet) and requires half holing the 3rd finger of the right hand.=20
I can't think of another use for the bottom RH ring. However, the rod =
that it is attached to is useful for leaning the RH ring finger against =
when lowering the pitch of the low A (or E3) in very soft dynamics. It =
is possible to keep the finger still whilst partially covering the hole. =

Regarding the sliver keys:
I have been intrigued by the differing views on technique with regards =
to the LH sliver key. The basis on which I work is to keep the finger =
movements in one hand wherever possible and as minimal as necessary. I =
find that it is generally more difficult to co-ordinate finger movement =
in 2 hands than in 1. Anything that makes technique easier, especially =
when there is limited preparation time, seems reasonable to me.
On a previous clarinet I had trouble with bumping the sliver keys =
because I have quite large hands. Rather than remove the keys I had them =
shaved very narrow by a repairist. On my Eflat I have them snipped very =
short which still makes them available without any chance of accidental =
opening of the tone holes. I have also heard of people "building up" =
their sliver keys(mainly RH I think) so that the finger does not cover =
the adjacent tone holes. Just some thoughts.

It helps with a useful (on some instruments) fingering for E flat 3 =
leger
lines up, i.e.:
s

x
x
o
o
x
E flat
Can anyone think of anything else it's useful for?
