I agree with Dee Hayes that the Rubank Elementary book is excellent for
teaching beginners the basics of clarinet and the rudiments of music in a
systematic way. It's dated, dull and demanding, but supplemented with a
little recreational material - easy solos with piano accompaniment - it
still works. It seems as though there should be something newer that does
the job as well, but I haven't found it yet. The Rubank Intermediate book
is also still useable, but at that point I usually put students in
Langenus, and start them on them the famous five pages of Practical
Exercises in Klose, three or four a week, to ground them in alternate
fingerings. By the way, does it seem to anyone else that Rubank's Advanced
Book II is less advanced than Book I, but more valuable? I don't use it
regularly, but it contains some very useful material.
