Subj: [kl] Sliver key

When I first began playing I used the sliver key often but now (many years
later) I find almost no occasion to use it at all. I suppose this has more
to do with the music I play than anything else - it just isn't the "right"
fingering for most situations I encounter. Though when I looked through the
Klose' practical exercises in book 1 I found that nearly half of the
exercises that included an Eb/G# appeared to be appropriately performed with
the sliver key. After some experiments I found that about half of those
could be fingered reasonably with either the sliver or the trill keys. So it
seems to me that the sliver key is important to know but not commonly the
best fingering.
On my instrument (Selmer Centered Tone) the trill key fingering and the fork
fingering sound better than the sliver key and this is why I avoid the
sliver key unless nothing else will do.
