I think the discussion began regarding Eb clarinets. Players with short,
thick fingers find on the relatively cramped Eb that we bump into the
"sliver" keys on both hands often enough to be inconvenient. I've never
disabled the ones on my sopranos (Bb and A), although I have had the keys
ground thinner. The right hand one is indispensable. The left hand one is
mostly good for chromatic passages that _can_ be played with the right hand
side key, so, for the occasional times I play eefer, I find it is
dispensable considering the embarrassment it causes when I open it
accidentally. I do use it on my sopranos for chromatics and sometimes for
intonation (mine is slightly flatter than the side key).
