While we're on the subject of music camps, I'll throw in one more. I
mentioned it previously, but I'll give more details about it.
The Dorian Music Camp is located at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa. It is
very northeastern located.
It is a week-long camp. There is one week for junior high and one week for
senior high. It is in mid-June, and the cost for the whole week (Sunday-
Saturday) is only $258! Then you may take private lessons for $22 for two
half-hour lessons. But you may take more if you wish. Tuition covcers board,
meals, and some activities. If you want additional food, bring your own money
to the student union. You pay extra to use the public pool and skating rink.
There is one or two nights where you swim in the rec center for free, and the
last night is a pool party and dance at the public pool that is free.
There are many ensembles at Dorian. Concert Band, Orchestra, Jazz Band,
Choir, Madrigal Choir, Music Theatre Workshop, Piano Workshop, Organ Workshop,
Woodwind Choir, Brass Choir, and many classes such as conducting, jazz improv,
and so much more!
It is a great music camp and people come from as far as California to come.
One year we had a student come from an African country! It is an incredible
music experience.
E-mail me if you want any info on dates for the junior high or senior high
camp, or names of those that teach there, etc.
I go there every year. Every year I've been at the senior high I've been
first chair in the band, and orchestra, and I make the jazz band in piano.
I'd love to see some of my fellow klarinetters come and join this great
experience.
This year, the orchestra performed: "L'Arlesienne Suite No.1" by Bizet,
"Prayer of Saint Gregory" by Hovhaness, "March to the Scaffold" from
"Symphonie Fantastique" by Berlioz, and "Fiddle-Faddle" by Anderson. the
concert band performed "Midway March" by Williams, "The Lord of the Rings
Symphony No.1, Movement 5, The Hobbits" by Meij, "Medley from Miss Saigon" by
Schonberg, "On a hymnsong of Philip Bliss" by Holsinger, "Seasons of Love"
from "Rent" by (can't remember), and "The Ascention" from "The Divine Comedy"
by Smith.
I stress again what a wonderful experience this is, and I encourage others to
give it a look!
Chris Hoffman
