Subj: [kl] List addresses

I recently received a query asking if we (the admins) sold the Klarinet list
members addresses. It seems that the amount of junk e-mail they received
increased after joining the Klarinet list

I'd like to make it clear that we do not sell any addresses from the
Klarinet mailing list. In fact, it is much more difficult to get a listing
of addresses now than it was before (generally, only the admins have access
to the list of mail addresses).

There are reasons why junk mail may increase after joining the list,
however. E-mail addresses are unsecured and can be recorded, either by
monitoring Internet traffic or by having a spider scanning Web pages. Since
the Klarinet list is archived on publicly accessible Web pages, it is
_possible_ that some e-mail addresses are being snarfed that way. I've
checked my logs and I find few hostile robots wandering about the sneezy Web
pages - they come by but they aren't there very often. Now, if I ran a
so-called "adult" site I'm sure I'd see a few more spiders getting addresses
off the pages ...
