snip......and I seriously recommend that anyone regard medical advice from a
musician
with the same skepticism he would have toward musical advice from a doctor.
The internet is not a reliable source for help with a health problem. (Even
many physicians are not qualified to diagnose and treat injuries of the
types athletes and musicians are prone to. You'd be surprised what great
gaps your doctor may have in his or her medical knowledge. Some are even
unfamiliar with the effects and side effects of drugs that they're
prescribing nearly every day - but that's another story.).......Snip

How about a doctor who was a music major (there are a few of us you know)?
Seriously, this is very very good advise. As with information on the net
(even on holy sights such as this) there is good and bad information, with
no real way of differentiating. Even good medical sights have been shown to
have outdated information. And yes, doctors do have gaps in there knowledge
especially about work related injuries in specialized fields, and
unfortunately many will not just tell you they don't know or it is beyond
there expertise (I think this comes from med school where giving a wrong
answer is better than no answer at all). There are clinics where docs that
specialize in musicians problems can be found. I have referred young
instrumentalists to the Chicago Rehabilitation Institute were
physician/musicians do full workups. I'm sure there are others.
