Exactly. The student (or even the mature player) must use what works for
him/her, not necessarily what worked for their band director's woodwind
pedagogy instructor. Besides, the hard reed that works great on an HS* or
O'Brien OB+ will most likely be TERRIBLE on a Vandoren 5JB. I personally
prefer a little more open mouthpiece like my Selmer C85 115, which blows
more freely and allows more vibrato, so a softer reed better fits my
playing style. If it dies in the altissimo register, it is TOO soft. But
I'm not sacrificing dynamic range or my dark chalumeau just to impress the
player next to me with my #17 reed!
