one of our lecturers here suffers from rsi. he's a damned good man,
and gives talks about the problems of rsi to new students, has posters
on the notice boards, and so on.

nevertheless, we carry on finding new cases in the dept.

in this country, we also have the splendid example of the high-court
judge who said people complaining of rsi were "feeble personalities"
complaining about a "malady not recognised by medical science". (this
was in the context of a contested dismissal of a journo with rsi.)

i know tendonitis and rsi have different statuses in this respect, but
(just like the arthritis in my wrists and fingers) the disease itself
is not clearly visible to the casual observer. (i do have some
slightly swollen joints, but to get a proper picture of my disease
they have to pump me full of radioactivity, and then wait for the
stuff to percolate into my bones... for some reason they don't do
that terribly often.)

such invisible diseases are very difficult to socially construct.
it'll all be different for me when i'm finally stuck in a wheel chair,
i suppose :-(
